Last month, Vermont Governor Phil Scott announced that property taxes are increasing 9.4 cents in 2018, about a 7 percent increase. The average family with a $200,000 house will see an increase of $188 on their property tax bill. Act 46, the so-called education equality act, has not lived up to its promise to reduce statewide property taxes or reduce overall spending on education in Vermont It’s time to admit this and move on.

Campaign for Vermont (CFV) has consistently called out the Legislature for these tax increases and their inability to pass meaningful property tax reform and we will continue to do so. Nearly half of this increase is directly attributable to the Legislature’s use of one-time funds and the shifting of property tax dollars from the Education Fund. Let’s hold them accountable and send a message to Montpelier that we are tired of broken promises. Join us in telling legislators that enough is enough and it’s time to hold the line on property taxes!

Accountability in Government
CFV co-hosts and produces a weekly TV segment called Vote for Vermont. On one of our most recent shows, we invited State Auditor Doug Hoffer to talk about what his office does to hold state government accountable. We cover performance auditing, state contracting practices, ski area leases of public lands, healthcare price transparency, and surprising findings from some of his audits.
